Cognitive decline among older African Americans with AD living in nursing homes Lead Investigator: Zyra Apugan Institution : UMSL College of Nursing E-Mail : zagg3@mail.umsl.edu Proposal ID : 775 Proposal Description: The proposed research aims to examine the significant relationship between extent of social support, degree of inner strength, and level of physical activity, with the degree of cognitive decline among older African Americans, 65 years and over, with Alzheimer's disease living in nursing homes. Specifically, the research aims to: 1) examine the direction of the relationship for extent of social support, degree of inner strength, and level of physical activity, with the degree of cognitive decline, and 2) determine any mediators among the observed variables. Further, the proposed research aims to examine the significant relationship between the demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, level of education, socioeconomic status or income) and the degree of cognitive decline. The main outcome of interest is degree of cognitive decline, which is a continuous variable. Multiple linear regression will be used to conduct a secondary analysis of existing data (i.e., NACC Uniform Data Set) to address the research aims.
